Saving and Displaying MySQL Data in PHP

In my quest to learn PHP and MySQL, I have put together a tiny script which saves form input data, and then displays it in the Tiny MCE editor. When you make an edit, or add to the current text in the form, it logs your name and IP address as well as the content that you enter. Note that it is the same text editor used in the WordPress CMS.

I have also integrated an upload manager where people can upload files.

NoReasonToPanic.com Blog Goes Live

I just finished putting on the final touches to the NoReasonToPanic blog. The blog is meant to be a resource for programmers, designers, and bloggers. I will have a FeedBurner email subscription up soon, so grab the feed if you’re interested.

As for the domain, NoReasonToPanic.com, the root directory has an install of WordPress MU. I will be working on that site this weekend.

For now, check it out at http://noreasontopanic.com/blog

**Update**

NoReasonToPanic.com is now fully functional. Please visit that homepage if you are interested in creating your own blog.

My Simplest GPT PHP Script

This PHP script is probably the first I ever put together, and at the time the most complex (for me). This GPT script, or Get Paid To script is similar in function to the popular websites SWATCash.com, TreasureTrooper.com, and CashCrate.com. People are paid to complete offers. I wanted to create an extremely simple website where people could complete offers without having to register, and still be “properly” tracked so that they could still be paid. Here is what I came up with in this small script.

Demo: http://earnings-easy.com

Pros:

  • Very simple
  • No MySQL database required
  • Very easy to customize
  • Very little knowledge of PHP/CSS required to customize and work with

Cons:

  • Probably buggy
  • Hard to track offer completion
  • Boring design
  • No admin area to add and remove offers - done manually
  • Very few comments in the script

Strange Red Light Emanating From Headphone Jack of MacBook

I usually use an external speaker system to listen to music from my Apple MacBook, and when I unplugged the audio cable from my headphone jack, a spooky red light spilled out onto my desk. I looked in and saw a brightly lit LED bulb. I wasn’t able to adjust the volume, and when I went into System Preferences > Sound I couldn’t choose internal speakers as my audio output source. I did some research and found out that I probably slightly bent the sensor which detects whether or not there is a cable plugged into the headphone jack.

I guess this means that my computer “thought” I had a pair of headphones or speakers plugged into it when I actually didn’t. Apparently, the easiest way to fix this is to take a match stick or like object and jiggle the sensor until it detects that there is nothing plugged in.

I found a fix for the red light problem. I’m not sure if I like it, but it works. After reading forum thread after forum thread of users that had this problem, I found a dude who fixed his jack with a rubber ended bobby pin. It seems a sensor gets bent (?) and the system thinks your digital external line is still plugged in. I took the butt end of a matchstick and tickled inside the jack. My red light went out. My internal speakers work again. Whatever.

Rise of Nations Has a Great Soundtrack

I realized the other night while sending my assault marines into Russia, that the game I was playing had a wonderful soundtrack. I did some Googling, found out that the soundtrack was made by Duane Decker. I located the audio files on my computer and then imported them in iTunes.

Here’s a sample of one song:

Updates

Patrick DeVivo dot com has decided to hit the big red reset button. The reason was mostly because I was sick of the messiness of my WordPress install. Every time I walked into the admin area, a new coat of dust had appeared. So, with things being reset and all, I’ve decided to take a new approach to this blog and what I post here. I will be posting on a more personal level (not that personal) and I will also try to keep things simple.

So for now, here the current updates:

  • Running WordPress Version 2.5
  • Using a new theme called “Dark Hut” by SpeckyBoy (Check the footer)
  • Less advertisements
  • Photo gallery + slideshows (coming soon)
  • Fancy progress bars, fancy rating stars and maybe some fancy charts and pies too (coming soon)
  • Polls

And much more, so keep checking back. I will be keeping up this blog up more often as well.
